Frequently asked questions.

General Questions

Is acupuncture covered by ACC for injuries?

Yes, acupuncture treatments for injuries are covered by ACC

Does acupuncture hurt?

No, acupuncture is generally painless. You might feel a mild sensation when the needle is inserted, followed by a slight ache. Most patients find it to be relaxing and pain-free.

What are the needles made of?

We use single-use stainless steel acupuncture needles at Te Waiora - Health & Wellness. These needles are clean, safe, and have no coating.

What should I wear to an acupuncture treatment?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothes. You may be asked to remove or adjust an item of clothing to expose certain areas of skin for acupuncture points. You will be covered for your privacy and comfort at all times.

How long is an acupuncture treatment?

Typically, treatments last between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?

First, we take a detailed history of your condition or injury. We will check your pulse and perform a visual tongue examination as part of a Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment. Based on this, a diagnosis is made. Then, you will lie on the treatment table while very fine needles are inserted at various points on the body. The needles are left in place for at least 20 minutes, though often closer to 30 minutes. Additional therapies such as massage, cupping, moxibustion, and dietary advice may also be included in your treatment. Many patients relax or even fall asleep during the session.
